چکیده

The often-argued and seldom-resolved issue of relating the bulk shrinkage of concrete to changes in the size of pores is analyzed using a simple model. It is shown that the pores in a composite containing both shrinking and nonshrinking solid phases can themselves either shrink or expand when the matrix shrinks, depending on the amount of restraint in the system. The analysis also applies to expansive deformations, which occur with some types of chemical attack of cement paste. A mathematical relationship between the degree of restraint in a composite and the relationship between bulk volume changes and pore volume changes is given. These observations provide guidelines for interpreting the meaning of gaps that often form between aggregate and paste in concrete. D 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Intrinsic Instability of Hardened Portland Cement Pastes and its Signifi- cance

A critical evaluation of shrinkage of saturated cement paste due to thermal cycling, increased ion diffusion through saturated cement paste due to thermal cycling, Powers water permeability data of dried and resaturated cement paste, and dying shrinkage data of Pickett and others reveals an intrinsic instability of Portland cement pastes. The instability is such that even a very mild treatment ...

Effect of Aggregate Size on the Restrained Shrinkage of the Concrete and Mortar

Since the aggregate is 80 % of the total volume of the concrete and mortar, the characteristic properties of the aggregate affect the fresh and hardened properties of the concrete and mortar [1]. The characteristic properties of the aggregate such as the shape, the size and structure affect the properties of the fresh concrete and the mortar like workability, settlement, pumping and segregation...

Influence of Cement Particle-Size Distribution on Early Age Autogenous Strains and Stresses in Cement-Based Materials

The influence of cement particle-size distribution on autogenous strains and stresses in cement pastes of identical waterto-cement ratios is examined for cement powders of four different finenesses. Experimental measurements include chemical shrinkage, to quantify degree of hydration; internal relative humidity development; autogenous deformation; and eigenstress development, using a novel embe...

Characterization and Modeling of Pores and Surfaces in Cement Paste: Correlations to Processing and Properties

Cement-based materials have complex multi-component, multiscale structures that first form through chemical reaction and then continue to change with time. As with most classes of materials, the porosity of cement paste strongly influences its properties, including strength, shrinkage, creep, permeability and diffusion. Pores in cement paste range in size from nanometers to millimeters, and num...
